A Journey Rooted in Heritage and Purpose

The Heritage Trust was established in 1984 in the historic city of Baroda by a visionary group of individuals—architects, artists, art historians, archaeologists, historians, museologists, and writers—all bound by a shared passion for conserving the city’s unique heritage. Their mission was clear: to protect and celebrate the tangible and intangible cultural assets that define Baroda’s identity.

From the very beginning, the Trust chose to remain city-centered, focusing its initiatives on local heritage awareness, preservation projects, and education. Whether it was safeguarding colonial-era structures, reviving traditional crafts, or conducting heritage walks through the city’s historic districts, the Trust played a pioneering role in fostering community involvement and policy-level advocacy.

The Champaner-Pavagadh Legacy

While the Trust’s mission was largely centered on Baroda, there was one project that led them beyond the city’s boundaries—Champaner-Pavagadh, a forgotten gem 40 kilometers away. Once the prosperous medieval capital of Gujarat, Champaner was found to be in a state of alarming neglect. Its rich architectural legacy, ancient temples, and mosques were overshadowed by the ecological destruction caused by over 100 stone quarries operating in the vicinity.

Recognizing the imminent threat to this historic landscape, the Heritage Trust undertook a long-term campaign of research, documentation, community engagement, and preservation advocacy. Over 18 years, this sustained effort would culminate in a landmark moment:

In 2004, Champaner-Pavagadh was officially declared India’s nomination to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list—a milestone achievement that stands as a symbol of the Trust’s commitment and perseverance.
